Metrics Roundtable Discussion,

Overview:   An open forum discussion of software metrics. Discussion begins with an introductory presentation of five minutes by each panelist covering a different type of metric or aspect of metrics usage. Questions from the floor follow. The meeting will conclude with closing comments from each panelist regarding the discussion with the attendees.

About the Speaker:

Mike Perdue - ASPIN Program Chair - Panel Moderator

Mike Perdue is an experienced software development executive. He has been COO and VP of Product Development for a medium size software application company in California as well as VP of Quality for another software application company in San Francisco. Prior to that he held senior positions with Sun Microsystems, Cadence Design Systems, Motorola and Datapoint. Mike has been very active in software development process definition and improvement. He has spoken at several quality conferences and conducted seminars for such universities as Cal Poly and Virginia Tech. Since the end of 1999, Mike has been a consultant in software practice. He and his wife Phyllis recently moved to Austin from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Panelists:

Roy Deegan is an IT Manager at Dell Computer Corporation. He has more than 20 years experience in hardware / software development, process improvement and project management. Roy holds a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and a Masters Degree in Technology Management. He is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, Software Quality Institute, Software Project Management Program, a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and an ASPIN Board Member.

Dr. Cecil Martin is authorized to teach the SEI Introduction to CMMI and is an authorized SEI CBA IPI and SCAMPI Lead Assessor. He has over 39 years of experience in systems and software engineering to include specific technical experience in requirements engineering, design, configuration management, quality assurance, software testing, IV&V, and process improvement. He has developed and maintained large complex stand alone and embedded automated systems. He has performed in management and technical positions at all levels within organizations. Currently he is CEO of MPSi and teaches workshops in CMM, CMMI, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Requirements Engineering, Configuration Management, Quality Assurance, Constructing a Requirements Specification, and Constructing a Design Specification.

Paul Patterson has 19 years experience with software product and services companies. As a senior consultant for Athens Group, Mr. Patterson utilizes his experience in a variety of industries and technologies to scope, plan and lead software development and implementation projects. Prior to Athens Group, he worked at Intelligent Technologies Corporation, where he led a group using data mining and Internet technologies to implement complex business intelligence solutions for multiple industries. Mr. Patterson was the project manager for the first applications development project to be rated SEI Level 2 in all of Motorola. Other past clients include Ford Motor Company, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Texas Department of Health, Iowa Department of Revenue, and Met-Life Capital. He has a BBA in Management Information Systems from Texas Tech University and is certified as a software project manager by the University of Texas’ Software Quality Institute, where he has also acted as a curriculum author for courses on IT Management.

Linda Shafer is Director of the Software Quality Institute at UT Austin. She has been a programmer, designer, analyst, facilitator, SQA, project leader, and manager in industry and academia. Ms. Shafer has worked for large companies (IBM, Motorola), small consulting firms, government agencies (Los Alamos National Laboratory, Office of the Attorney General), and higher education (The College of William and Mary, UT, UofH). She was an SEI CMM instructor/assessor for Motorola. She has a BA from UT Austin and an MBA from The University of New Mexico. She has written or co-authored over two dozen articles and four books; is a PMP® and a CSQE.

Lawrence Waugh spent 8 years in Austin working for four enterprise software providers before co-founding Calavista. Calavista supports the development efforts of software companies through custom development work, development process consulting, and QA management. Clients have included Dell, Lombardi, Telelogic, Hire.com, Between Markets, Trilogy Software, SGI, and e-Perceptions. Prior to Calavista, Lawrence served as VP of Engineering for Aviri, Director of Technical Integration and Director of Professional Services for Agillion, Director of Content for pcOrder, and Senior Technical Manager for Trilogy Software. Lawrence holds a Bachelors Degree in Aeronautic/Astronautic Engineering from MIT, and a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Stanford University. He also spent over 7 years as a naval aviator, serving as a carrier-based attack pilot during Operation Desert Storm. Lawrence and his wife Kim have 4 children - Samantha, Amanda, Brandon and Caitlin.
